What is the history of ASSA?
ASSA was founded in 1881 by August Stenman, a native of Eskilstuna in Sweeden. August Stenman was a pioneer in many ways; he laid the groundwork for the market-leading position ASSA Abloy is known for today. In 1910, August started producing screws for ASSA’s own products but realized the commercial value and mass produced them for export.
After his death in 1920, his daughter Elise Akerhielm transformed the company to a corporation and appointed long-standing employee Sixteen Nilsson as its first president. Believing locks to be the next big thing in security solutions, ASSA started producing locks in 1939 under K.S. Thulins, a small lock company in Sweden. In 1947, ASSA introduced the world’s first 7-pin cylinders and in 1951 started licensing out the production of ASSA keys due to the high demand for ASAA’s products after WWII.
In 1981, ASSA celebrated its 100th anniversary with the launch of a new generation of lock technology, the Twin 6000 system, used for the dual locking mechanism in the current ASSA cylinders.
In 1994, there was a merger between ASSA AB and Abloy Oy, a Finnish company to form ASSA ABLOY Group, which has grown from a predominant European brand to an International corporation operating in over 70 countries worldwide, employing around 43,000 staff and generating sales of about $7 billion.
In 2001, the company led the development of high security and patented key control solutions with flagship products such as the ASSA CLIQ, a tech platform created for intelligent cylinders. In 2013, they released the ASSA CLIQ Remote systems developed to enhance the customer’s remote security, administration and user experience.
